maybe one day you'll wake and you'll find me gone

From The New York Times:

"Sheffield was the hitter many opposing pitchers feared more than anyone else with the Yankees. But Sheffield’s time in New York is over. He is a Tiger now."

Such trumped up, overblown writing might be slightly excusable, if gratingly amateurish, as an opening paragraph. But this was the second-to-last paragraph in an article all about the trade.

My point is this: Hey, bad writer! We read the whole article up to this point! We know he got traded! You are not in any way driving anything home or adding gravitas, you are just being phony!

Somebody wrote this tripe, somebody edited it, and somebody printed it. The only saving grace is that it wasn't on TimesSelect, where somebody would have had to pay extra for it.

What they should've written is:

"He. Is. A. Tiger. Now. Thank you. And, Good Night."
